Description
In a nutshell:
A biodynamic red from Stellenbosch, with juicy dark fruit, a savoury, earthy edge, and fresh acidity that gives it a lighter, more elegant feel than many a South African red.
The lowdown:
A lively red blend packed with juicy dark berries, plums, a touch of spice, and a coastal freshness. It's made from Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot - each grape adding its own thing, from rich fruit to herbal, earthy notes. Smooth and easy-going, with a savoury finish that lingers moreishly, it's fresh, balanced, and seriously drinkable. A good pick when you want something with flavour but not too heavy.
The Producer:
Waterkloof, established in 2004 by Paul Boutinot, is a bit of a favourite of those who appreciate wines made with care and a more than a touch of conscience. This family-run estate is proudly organic and biodynamic, even sporting the WWF Biodiversity Champion title. Perched on the Schapenberg hills overlooking False Bay, their vineyards benefit from cool breezes and a leisurely growing season, producing wonderfully balanced fruit. In the cellar, winemaker Nadia Langenegger allows the grapes to speak for themselves with minimal interference, creating wines that feel genuine, refined, and very much a taste of their unique surroundings.
When to drink:
Great with roast lamb, veggie casseroles, or a herby lentil stew - the juicy fruit and savoury finish work well with rich, wholesome dishes. Also great with everyday comfort foods like pizza or shepherd's pie.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
