Description
In a nutshell:
Complex, captivating layers of black fruit and spice from Stellenbosch - this elegant charmer is worth every penny.
The lowdown:
Waterkloof, the Stellenbosch estate known for its organic and biodynamic approach, has truly excelled with this superior Bordeaux blend. The wine displays alluring redcurrant and plum aromas with a hint of cedar. Crafted predominantly with Cabernet Franc, supported by Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2020 vintage benefited from meticulous viticulture. Extended maturation, almost three years, in grand old oak foudres has honed the wine's supple texture and graceful tannins. On the palate, it's both comforting and intriguing with a lingering spicy finish. This is a seriously refined and pleasurable wine.
The Producer:
Waterkloof, established in 2004 by Paul Boutinot, is a bit of a favourite of those who appreciate wines made with care and a more than a touch of conscience. This family-run estate is proudly organic and biodynamic, even sporting the WWF Biodiversity Champion title. Perched on the Schapenberg hills overlooking False Bay, their vineyards benefit from cool breezes and a leisurely growing season, producing wonderfully balanced fruit. In the cellar, winemaker Nadia Langenegger allows the grapes to speak for themselves with minimal interference, creating wines that feel genuine, refined, and very much a taste of their unique surroundings.
When to drink:
This seriously structured red will reach its elegant peak in a few years' time; for now, decant generously and serve with a hearty roast like a rib of beef.
Suitable for Vegans
