Description
In a nutshell:
An admirable Single Quinta Vintage Port from the oldest British Port House.
The lowdown:
Single Quinta Vintage Ports are made in a similar way to other Vintage Ports in that they're bottled, without filtration, after a couple or so years in barrel and continue to mature in bottle from there. They will have a sediment and so should be decanted before drinking.
Quinta da Cavadinha is one of Warre's best and most reliable estates and, outside of vintage years, its wines are frequently released as single quinta vintages. It's a delicious port with flavours of mulberry, raisins and prunes that's now mellowed elegantly.
The Producer:
Founded in 1670, Warre's is old British Port House which has remained a family-owned company throughout its long history. These days it's a part of the Symington Family Estates who are the sole remaining independent Port producer to be in the hands of just one family. In addition to Warre's they also count Graham's, Cockburn's and Dow's in their stable. The backbone of Warre's Ports come from Quinta da Cavadhina in the Pinhão valley, and the historic vineyard of Quinta do Retiro Antigo in the Rio Torto valley. The winery at Cavadinha is one of the most specialised small 'boutique' wineries, in the Douro and is features in Hugh Johnson's World Atlas of Wine. In addition, some of Warre's finest Ports come from the privately family-owned vineyards of Alvito and Netas.
When to drink:
Now ready for drinking it will be a very fulfilling port and is terrific with mature hard cheeses.
