Description
In a nutshell:
A fragrant and juicy single-vineyard Côtes de Nuits red from one of the top villages. It's got that effortless charm Burgundy does so well.
The lowdown:
Vosne-Romanée, known for its prestigious vineyards, has a well-earned reputation. Patrice Cacheux, carrying on his family's legacy, produces wines that live up to the hype with quiet confidence. This, from the Les Chalandins vineyard near Clos de Vougeot, strikes a fine balance. Rich and ripe from time in new oak, it's lifted by fresh cherry notes that keep it lively. The oak is well-judged, adding polish without overwhelming, leading to a refined, aromatic finish. A classy effort.
The Producer:
With his home and winery located in the Côte de Nuits village of Vosne-Romanée Patrice Cacheux is the fourth generation of the family to run the domaine. They have around 7 hectares of vines in total most of which are in the appellation Vosne-Romanée itself, along with some parcels in Nuits-Saints Georges and Chambolle-Musigny. They are also one of the select domaines which have a holding in the famous Échezeaux Grand Cru. Overall the estate's style is one of aiming for rich, ripe wines that are made with a healthy dose of new oak and on which Patrice's father, Jacques, earned the domaine's good reputation in the latter years of the twentieth century. And under Patrice's guidance this approach has stood the test of time very well.
When to drink:
Perfect with roast partridge or pheasant and a scattering of wild mushrooms - its silky red fruit and earthy notes are just the ticket for the game's rich, savoury depth. Drinking nicely now, but there's no rush; it'll hold its own well until the end of the decade.
