Description
In a nutshell:
A seductive and fruity New Zealand Pinot Noir from the Marlborough region.
The lowdown:
Villa Maria, one of New Zealand's most well known and most reliable wine producers, make an extensive collection of wines of which their 'Private Bin' range represents excellent value for money. The fruit for this wine is taken from a selection of vineyards in Marlborough's Awatere and Wairau Valleys aimed to make a wine that properly reflects the region's character. It has an abundance of red cherries on the nose, along with baking spices such as clove and cinnamon. On the palate, fruit flavours of cranberries and fresh raspberries are intermingled with freshly roasted coffee beans and soft cocoa like-tannins and just a subtle hint of oak on the velvety finish.
The Producer:
Villa Maria, one of New Zealand's most prominent and award-winning wineries, was founded in 1961 by Sir George Fistonich. From humble beginnings on a small patch of land near Aucklands airport, they've grown into one of the countrys largest producers, with vineyards spread across all of New Zealand's main wine regions. After many years of independence, Villa Maria was acquired, in 2021, by Indevin, a company that describes itself as an "unsung juggernaut of the New Zealand wine industry". Quite the journey for a winery that started so small and has now become a giant in the industry.
When to drink:
A very versatile Pinot Noir this will go well with roast chicken, smoked salmon or simply with mature cheddar.
