Description
In a nutshell:
A traditional Southern Rhône red from the Cru village of Vacqueyras.
The lowdown:
Domaine la Garrigue's traditional village Vacqueyras is classically Provençal in style, hand harvested from old vines and made in cellars set on Les Garrigues plateau not far from the village itself. It's a blend of predominately Grenache Noir giving roundness, weight and fruit, with some Syrah adding colour and spice, with a little Mouvedre bringing structure. Lightly crushed with the stalks left on, matured in concrete for at least 18 months, and bottled on the estate without fining or filtration, this is a fantastic wine of the old school. Rich red cherry and berry fruit aromas with notes of leather, musk and the hot dry earthiness of Provence garrigue countryside. The palate is full and rounded with rich flavours, good structure, rounded tannins, a kick of spice and with touches of dry earthiness and herbs. A lovely wine that transports you straight to southern France
The Producer:
Domaine la Garrigue set in the heart of the Vacqueyras appellation in the southern Rhône was established in 1850 by the Bernard family and has remained in their hands right through to the present day with several members of the family being fully involved with all the aspects of running the estate. They also run a well-regarded local restaurant - 'Les Florêts' in nearby Gigondas. The estate's buildings are a short distance outside the village and sit on a small plateau appropriately named Les Garrigues. It's among the larger domaines in the area covering over 60 hectares of vines with old vine Grenache forming the backbone of their plantings.
When to drink:
Try with roast partridge, pigeon or rabbit with cabbage, or duck with olives.
