Description
In a nutshell:
Dark and strong Belgian Trappist Quadrupel from the Brasserie de Rochefort near the Ardennes forest.
The lowdown:
One of the beers that makes Trappist breweries so famous. Really rich and complex, with a deep tawny colour and thick head it's a regular contender for World's best beer. Ripe dark fruits and chocolate are the main tastes here which are rounded out with a hint of nuttiness. Big and strong classic.
The Brewery:
When it comes to historical Belgian beers brewed by monks, they fall into two camps; Trappiste or Abbey beers. Brasserie de Rochefort falls into the former. Authentic Trappist beers must be brewed within abbey walls, under the control of the resident monks and any profits made can only be used for the upkeep of the abbey. At l'Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy, Rochefort beers have been brewed for centuries, although the brewery we know today was established in the 20th century and makes a small range of distinctive brews which have a loyal following among Trappist aficionados.
