In a nutshell: Stylishly rich and savoury this Marlborough Pinot Noir packs a lot of punch for its money.
The lowdown: There's a breezy finesse here with the classic cranberry and wild strawberry aromas of good Pinot Noir and a touch of savoury mushroom and toasty oak giving a wine with enough bite and texture to be foody but with enough generosity of fruit to be a delicious glass on its own. A lick of oak in the winemaking lends a little soothing creaminess to the whole while the soft tannins and well balanced acidity ensures good length and weight.
Cloud Factory fruit comes mainly from a vineyard on the Rapaura Gravels where the stony soils absorb the sun's warmth in the day, radiating it back to the vines overnight which helps give the fruit additional character which comes out in the wine. After fermentation the wine was sent to age in a mixture of stainless steel and French oak which gives a good mix of fresh brightness and savoury bite.
When to drink: A perfect glass all on its own, it's also made to go with rich and aromatic food such as duck dim sums, tempura fried vegetables and oriental salads.
