Description
In a nutshell:
A rich and rewarding Super Tuscan and little brother of the world famous Sassicaia
The lowdown:
Le Difese is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese which gives it, maybe, a bit more of an Italian character than the estate's other wines. The 2018 is a vibrant wine full of red cherry, wild strawberry and cassis aromas with aromatic herbiness coming through. On the supple palate it has a freshness with a lively minerality and bursting with summer fruit flavours.
The Producer:
Tenuta San Guido is best known as the home of Sassicaia, one of the world's most sought-after wines. They are based in the small Tuscan village of Bolgheri not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea coast. Sassicaia is the original 'Super Tuscan' made from Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc rather than the area's main grape Sangiovese. When they first released it in 1968 it quickly became a sensation, revolutionised Tuscan wine and created a new genre in the process. The estate is currently in the hands of Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta who continues to build on their success by ensuring their uncompromising production methods are kept at the cutting edge. These days he's supported by his daughter Priscilla who is taking on an increasingly prominent role. During the early 2000s they also introduced two further wines, Guidalberto and Le Difese here making use of Merlot and Sangiovese blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.
When to drink:
It's fresh and enjoyable now, but the tannic framework will allow it to improve up another five years if you prefer a more savoury style.
