Hawke's Bay in New Zealand's North Island has a knack for impressive Bordeaux-style blends, and this one's a fine example. It's crafted solely from estate-grown fruit, with each plot carefully harvested, fermented, and aged separately before blending - a touch of fuss, perhaps, but it shows in the glass. The nose is packed with blackberry and ripe raspberry, while the palate brings vibrant plum and cherry flavours, with just a hint of mint and cacao. Balanced by grippy, savoury tannins and a fresh acidity, it's a structured, elegant wine thats both refined and relaxed.

Located in New Zealand's Hawke's Bay region, Te Mata Estate is the country's oldest winery, established in 1892 with three vineyards on the Havelock Hills. The modern era began in 1978 under John and Wendy Buck, who enhanced its reputation for excellent Bordeaux reds and Chardonnay whites. Te Mata has since expanded its vineyard holdings across Hawke's Bay, capitalizing on the region's favourable soils and climate. Their most famous wine, Coleraine, is named after John Buck's grandfather's hometown in Northern Ireland. Other top wines include Bullnose Syrah and Elston Chardonnay, regularly acclaimed for their quality.
When to drink:
This is happy alongside just about anything that once trotted through a field - roast lamb, beef, you name it - and it won't say no to a decent hunk of hard cheese either.
