Description
In a nutshell:
Very fine, deep and complex Bordeaux blend from New Zealand's oldest winery.
The lowdown:
Still family owned Te Mata Estate in Hawke's Bay, North Island has been making wine since the 1880s and still today produces some of New Zealand's finest. Their flagship style is a classic Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc dominant that work together in harmony to produce wines with a finesse and restraint. Separate parcels of hand-harvested grapes go through a traditional fermentation before aging in new and used French oak barrels for 15 months before being blended and returned to barrel for a further 10 months. Bright, pronounced aromas of dark plum, blackberry and dark cherry with notes of cassis, bay leaf and lavender lead onto a fresh and intense palate. There's bags of ripe fruits with both depth of flavour and crisp, juicy, youthful freshness, the tannins are dry and grippy and the length long.
The Producer:
Located in New Zealand's Hawke's Bay region, Te Mata Estate is the country's oldest winery, established in 1892 with three vineyards on the Havelock Hills. The modern era began in 1978 under John and Wendy Buck, who enhanced its reputation for excellent Bordeaux reds and Chardonnay whites. Te Mata has since expanded its vineyard holdings across Hawke's Bay, capitalizing on the region's favourable soils and climate. Their most famous wine, Coleraine, is named after John Buck's grandfather's hometown in Northern Ireland. Other top wines include Bullnose Syrah and Elston Chardonnay, regularly acclaimed for their quality.
When to drink:
Decant for 1-2 hours when drinking now, though this wine easily has the quality to go through into the 2030s. Works well with hard cheeses.
Suitable for Vegetarians
