Description
In a nutshell:
A great value fresh and fruity, dry Romanian rosé that's a joy to drink.
The lowdown:
Not always thought of as a major wine producing nation Romania does in fact have an ancient heritage. They still produce traditional wines made from indigenous varieties but these days, with significant foreign investment, high quality wines are increasingly being made from international grape varieties. One such company is Cramele Recas which Englishman Philip Cox has turned into probably Romania's most successful winery. Their Solara Rosé is a perfect example of their art. It's a fruity blend of Merlot and local variety Feteasca Neagra of which only free run juice is used. This give it the pale colour and subtle flavours. It has a pleasingly soft mouthfeel with lovely strawberry and ripe red fruit flavours balanced with a crisp acidity. At the zesty finish theres a touch of spice which makes it nicely stimulating.
The Producer:
Cramele Recas, based just outside of Timisoara in western Romania has been transformed in the years since the early 2000s when Bristolian Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira took the reins. Their 700-hectare estate is now one of the biggest producers in the country and they make a huge range of wines. The combination of having extensive vineyards in an area with great terroir and that has cultivated vines back to ancient times and modern quality focussed and efficient production methods has enabled them to produce excellent and good value wines that are now becoming more widely seen. They cultivate both indigenous and international varieties with great success from good entry level wines to premium cuvées that stand comparison with any other region around the world.
When to drink:
Easy to enjoy this makes a perfect aperitif or lunchtime wine, and would also pair well with some a bit spicy like a Thai red curry.
Suitable for Vegans
