Description
In a nutshell:
This layered, textured orange wine from Romania has bright citrus and apricot flavours, balanced by a fresh, zippy finish that keeps it lively and oh-so-drinkable.
The lowdown:
How to describe an orange wine? Think of it as a white wine made like a red. The grapes are crushed and left on their skins, giving the wine extra colour, character, and a touch of tannin - just like a red. It's a style thats really catching on and a great choice if you fancy a white with a bit more 'oomph'. This is the perfect place to dip your toe in - it's affordable and beautifully made. With a deep colour, rich quince aromas, ripe stone fruit flavours, and a powerful tannic structure, it finishes long and full of personality.
The Producer:
Back in the late 1980s, as Romania began to emerge from behind the Iron Curtain, three families decided to take on a challenge: reviving a rundown, state-owned winery and 650 hectares of neglected vineyards. What started as a bold gamble has, thanks to Englishman Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira, grown into Cramele Recas the most successful winery in Romania. Today, the estate is widely recognised for its scale, modernity, and an impressively diverse range of wines. From organic natural and orange wines to approachable everyday bottles, they focus on producing wines that consistently over-deliver. Despite their size, the ethos is rooted in quality and innovation, with state-of-the-art facilities that embrace both tradition and experimentation. Their open-minded approach, coupled with a skill for crafting wines with character, certainly sets them apart.
When to drink:
Lamb tagine, slow-cooked pork, or even some hard cheeses -this orange wine's ripe stone fruit and gentle tannins make it a brilliant match for richer dishes and cheese boards alike.
Suitable for Vegans
