Description
In a nutshell:
An effortlessly suave Margaux, showing ripe red fruit, smooth tannins, and just a hint of floral charm.
The lowdown:
From Château Rauzan-Ségla, this, their second wine, gets plenty of praise in Margaux circles, and the 2016 certainly lives up to the reputation. A near-even blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it opens with rich red and dark fruit aromas, alongside a subtle floral note and a touch of minerality. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, with ripe fruit flavours and polished tannins, making it easy to enjoy now. Well-crafted and sophisticated without a stratospheric price tag.
The Producer
Château Rauzan-Ségla has always been considered among Bordeaux's elite, ranked as a Deuxième Cru Classé in the prestigious 1855 classification. However, by the 1980s, the estate had lost a bit of its lustre, with its wines falling short of their former glory. Things took a turn for the better though in the 1990s when Chanel stepped in - not just masters of haute couture but rather keen on fine wine too. With serious investment and a clear focus on quality, the estate underwent a transformation, both in the winery and the vineyards. Today, Rauzan-Ségla is firmly back on form, with a Grand Vin that's widely considered one of the finest in Margaux. Their second wine is also highly regarded, offering excellent value for money.
When to drink:
It's drinking beautifully now but has the legs to keep going for another 10 or 15 years if you're patient. With food, you won't go wrong with duck confit or beef bourguignon - rich, comforting classics that bring out its smooth tannins and elegant structure.
