Description
In a nutshell:
Rounded and laden with dark fruits this is the second wine of the famous Château Talbot.
The lowdown:
Widely considered one of the Médoc's best second wines this receives all the same careful, loving treatment as its senior stablemate, with the mainly difference being that it's made for slightly younger drinking. After fermentation it spends 15 months in oak barriques and comes loaded with raspberries, cherries and a hint of mint on the nose. With quite a full-bodied feel and well rounded tannins it provides a flavour packed finish and proudly demonstrates the impeccable credentials of one of Bordeaux's leading estates.
The Producer:
Château Talbot is one of the ten Quatrièmes Crus Classés of the 1855 Bordeaux classification and with its more than 100 hectares of vines is one of the largest in the Médoc. The estate's name is derived from John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, a renowned military commander during the final period of the Hundred Year's War and who lost his life at the Battle of Castillon in 1453 after which time the English finally lost control of Aquitaine. With a name that easily trips of an English speaker's tongue Talbot has always been a popular claret this side of the Channel and it's fair to say it's always been a reliable performer. In the last few years the owners, the Cordier family, have invested heavily in further improvements across both the vineyards and wine making facilities and this should see them retain their position among the upper echelons of Médoc wines.
When to drink:
It's delicious drinking right now and for the next four or five years. Ideal with mature hard cheeses or red meats.
