Description
In a nutshell:
A creamy textured and warmly complex Alsatian Pinot Gris from the French side of the Rhine valley.
The lowdown:
Pinot Gris has long been a regularly seen grape variety in Alsace, but prior to around 2007 it would be labelled under its local name of Tokay d'Alsace and it was to avoid confusion with the famous Hungarian sweet wines that it was decided to label it by its correct name. This example from Domaines Schlumberger is from their 'Prince Abbes' which they like to think of as being their '2nd wines' in Bordeaux terms. Most of the fruit comes from their Schimberg vineyards. It's a wine that successfully pulls off the elusive trick of being rich and intense yet refreshing, with incredible finesse all at the same time. It also has satisfying hints of spice, honeyed citrus and lychee leading up to the weighty finish. It's certainly a pedigree wine from an acknowledged expeert producer.
The Producer:
Founded in 1810, Domaines Schlumberger's vineyards sit on the renowned slopes above the village of Guebwiller. Now run by the 7th generation of the Schlumberger family, they've steadily grown over the years to become one of the finest domaines in Alsace. With over 70-hectares they have the largest holdings of Grand Cru in the region from where produce wines that reflect both tradition and meticulous care.
When to drink:
It has just the weight and depth to make good pairings with pâté and salads, or poultry dishes.
Suitable for Vegetarians
