Fantastic fresh and juicy organic Shiraz Viognier blend from South Africa.
The lowdown:
Quite simply, this is a vibrant, fun and very moreish Shiraz. It's made from organic grapes in a minimal interventionist way. The fruit is hand picked, the fermentation is spontaneous, and the wine is matured in a mixture of stainless steel and oak barrels for 9 months before bottling. 90% Shiraz with 10% Viognier this is a wine bursting with fresh red fruits with floral and herbal touches and a bit of pepperiness on the finish. Medium-bodied and smooth with mild tannins and bright acidity, it's a real pleasure
The Producer:
Willie and Tania De Waal are the fifth generation of the De Waal Family to own the farm, Schoone Oord where Scali Wines is based on the beautiful slopes of Paardeberg midway between Paarl and Malmesbury. It was in 1993 that Willie and Tania decided to start making wine here from the vines they were passionately nurturing. Beginning with 50 litres in 1993, they progressed gradually and made their first barrique in 1997. The quality was exceptional and they realised the opportunity was there to scale things up and reach out to a larger market. Since then, theyve managed to gain international recognition for their wines which are made with organically grown grapes.
When to drink:
Very versatile and easy going. In warm weather drink slightly chilled on its own, or have it with easy foods like pizza, pasta, or burgers.
