Description
In a nutshell:
A gusty, spicy and concentrated southern French organic red blend from the Rhône Delta.
The lowdown:
You could think of this as being interchangeable with a good red Côtes du Rhone. The terroir of the part of the Rhône Delta this comes from is not dissimilar. Its a blend led by Syrah and Grenache which, after fermentation, spends between 4 to 6 months on its lees prior to bottling. On the nose it's full of bright red berry aromas while being spicy and rich on the palate and full of mouthfilling fruitiness with a hint of liquorice and wild herbs showing through. Altogether very well balanced with a clean tannic structure and long finish. There's a lot of wine here for the money.
The Producer:
Château Saint Cyrgues is located in the Rhône delta south of Nîmes. This place steeped in history was on the pilgrim route to both Santiago di Compostela and Jerusalem and is sited at the exact spot where the church of Saint Cirice des Marges once stood. Vines have been cultivated here for centuries, and in recent times their wines have received awards on several occasions. Each generation over the last century have contributed to the identity of Château Saint Cyrgues, and while theyre mindful of tradition they also keep up with times with all cultivation being organic.
When to drink:
It's the kind of close-grained red itching to match up with roasted or barbecued meats.
