Description
In a nutshell:
Elegant, layered and vibrant Côte de Beaune white Burgundy.
The lowdown:
Patrick Miolane's estate is based in the neighbouring village of Saint-Aubin, but from his small parcel of vines in Puligny-Montrachet he produces a very stylish wine indeed. The fruit is from vines over half a century old and which have an excellent mineral structure and real vibrancy of flavour. Half of the wine is matured in tank and half in oak barrels, 20% of which are new. The aromas that hit you are of ripe apples and pears while on the palate, balanced against the tangy crispness, it's round, generous and full with a touch of delicacy that lingers long right up to the finish.
The Producer:
Patrick Miolane took over his family's estate, based in the Côte de Beaune village of Saint-Aubin in 1983 when aged just 20. He was joined by his daughter, Barbara, in 2005 since when the pair have run things between them. Theyve 9 hectares on their home turf in Saint-Aubin together with some further parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. The whole estate is worked on lutte raisonée principles, that's to say in a sustainable manner with chemical treatments being minimised as much as possible. Herbicides are not used on their soils and the vines themselves are very carefully looked after. Shoot removal is assiduously carried out thorough the summer to keep yields in check and harvesting each year is held back until ripening is complete.
When to drink:
A wine very light on its feet, but with all the classic Puligny character. Fillet of sea bass, or similar is just the ticket here.
