Description
In a nutshell:
A Loire classic with textbook crispness, bright citrus, and orchard fruit - all lifted by that distinctive smoky, flinty je-ne-sais-quoi that makes Pouilly-Fumé so irresistibly elegant.
The lowdown:
Pouilly-Fumé, along with its neighbour Sancerre on the opposite bank of the Loire, is synonymous with top-notch Sauvignon Blanc - often showing a rounder, more smoky, gunflinty character. This one captures that beautifully. Grapefruit and a touch of flint lead on the nose, while tropical fruit and a refreshing zing burst through on the palate. It's crisp, mineral-driven, and nicely balanced with a touch of fullness and a long, satisfying finish. In short, textbook Pouilly-Fumé - delivering classic Loire elegance from start to finish.
The Producer:
A pillar of Sancerre winemaking, Joseph Mellot has an impressive 500-year history, with roots dating back to 1513. This family-run estate has been passed down through the generations and continues to thrive today. Much of its modern success is thanks to Alexandre Mellot, who championed the Loire's potential, expanding vineyards, modernising the winery, and building a strong export presence. Since 1987, Catherine Corbeau-Mellot has been at the helm, strengthening the estate's reputation with her expertise in sales and marketing. Today, Joseph Mellot remains a benchmark producer, known for wines that capture the elegance and character of their terroir.
When to drink:
Brilliant with richer fish like monkfish, smoked haddock, or trout - the crisp, smoky character cuts through beautifully. It also makes an elegant, easy-going aperitif.
