Description
In a nutshell:
Bright, elegant, and beautifully balanced Pouilly-Fuissé, with zesty citrus, ripe orchard fruits, and a subtle mineral edge.
The lowdown:
Pouilly-Fuissé wines are the most prestigious of the Mâconnais, and this example is one that shows just why that is. From suntrap vineyards around Solutré and Vergisson, it has a fresh, clean character with a subtle mineral edge. A touch of oak ageing - just a third of it goes into barrel - adds gentle depth without overshadowing the crispness. The result is a wine with an understated intensity and a real sense of place, balancing richness with a light, elegant touch.
The Producer:
Domaine Michel Chavet et Fils is tucked away in the village of Davayé, with views of the nearby Rock of Solutré, where some of their vineyards line the slopes. Their 12 hectares of vines, averaging 35 years old, thrive in the stony, clay-limestone soils of these south-facing slopes, making the most of the Mâconnais sunshine. Christophe Chavet, the sixth generation to run the estate, continues the family tradition with a deft touch, crafting wines that capture the essence of this distinctive corner of Burgundy.
When to drink:
Pan-fried trout with almonds or a creamy chicken and mushroom dish works a treat, balancing the wine's fresh mineral edge with its subtle richness.
