Description
In a nutshell:
A powerful, concentrated and full bodied Spanish red from a famous estate.
The lowdown:
Owned by the Álvarez family, who also count the famous wines of Vega Sicilia among their stable, Pintia comes from the hot and remote region of Toro to the west of Valladolid and is made from 100% Tinta de Toro which is the local nae for Tempranillo. The dense plum, cherry and nutty oak gives an initial impression something of a Rioja on steroids while the sweet fruit and spice give way to more savoury meaty and earthy notes mid palate. It's a powerful, concentrated and full bodied wine with ripe, soft tannins, satisfying length and an impeccable pedigree.
The Producer:
In 1996 Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia was purchased by the Álvarez family who added it to their stable of wineries headed up the famous Vega Sicilia. They were looking to produce a different style of Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) from the terroirs of Toro in the wild and remote Duero valley. These days Toro is a region that, despite its searingly hot summer temperatures, has attracted a clutch of top producers from neighbouring Ribera del Duero and further afield who've recognized the area's potential for producing great wines. As with all wines from the Álvarez family's estates the care and attention taken in cultivation and production is unsurpassed and while their wines undoubtedly command premium prices the quality of the is ample justification.
When to drink:
Now ready to drink and will keep well until around the end of the 2020s. With its strength and big flavours this matches perfectly with prime red meats.
