Description
In a nutshell:
Supple and expressive, this is a refined and impressive right-bank Claret.
The lowdown:
The second wine on the renowned Chateau Figeac, this a very decent wine in its own right and made to be drunk a little younger than its big brother. It has vibrant aromas of ripe red cherry fruit with some hints of mocha notes as well. A well-rounded body nicely balanced by good levels of natural acidity and smooth tannins. Quite forward and very delicious. Its around 70% merlot with the rest mainly Cabernet Franc and spent 15 months maturing in new oak barrels. For a wine of its pedigree it's excellent value for money.
The Producer:
Château Figeac is in the top echelons of Saint-Émilion estates and it's also one of the biggest. Their more than 40 hectares of vines is a lot in these parts. Down to their relatively gravelly soils they grow a roughly equal proportion of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which is in contrast to most Saint-Émilion estates where Merlot usually dominates. In 2022 they were promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé (A), one of a very few in the appellation, and sit alongside the likes of the revered Cheval Blanc.
When to drink:
Drinking well now, it has the potential to age well for another five or ten years. Great with a juicy steak or something gamey like vension.
