Description
In a nutshell:
Bright red fruit, a touch of spice, and silky tannins - an understated and elegant Côte de Beaune red.
The lowdown:
The east-facing premier cru Les Vergelesses vineyard is widely considered to produce the finest reds in Pernand-Vergelesses, and this from Jean-Jacques Girard does that reputation justice. The nose offers vibrant red fruits with a touch of earthy mushroom, while the palate brings ripe black cherries, gentle spices, and a subtle herbal edge. Now at its peak, it's full-bodied and generous, with soft, velvety tannins to round things off. Pernand-Vergelesses reds are often unfairly overlooked, but this is one that quietly demands a bit of attention.
The Producer:
The Girards are one of the oldest winemaking families in the village of Savigny-Lès-Beaune with a history stretching back over five centuries. Today the current owner of the domaine, Jean-Jacques Girard and his son Vincent combine the best of modern and traditional techniques to produce a range of wines that all show great purity and elegance. The reds are delicious, accessible wines which are fantastic for drinking when young but also have great potential for ageing. And the whites have really come into their own since their new winery, completed in 2014, allows them to be fermented in their own separate temperature controlled cellar.
When to drink:
It's drinking beautifully at the moment and pairs a treat with rabbit in mustard sauce or a proper venison stew - hearty game being just the ticket.C
