Description
Spain: Atlantic Northwest
Fruity & Bright White
Dry - Medium-Bodied - Unoaked
Vegan - ABV 13.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A Galician Godello with zip and substance: citrus brightness, stone fruit depth and a clean mineral finish.
The Lowdown:
Monterrei, tucked away in Galicia, is prime territory for dry whites with a bit of bite - and Godello makes the most of it, even in the damp, Atlantic air. After years of being overlooked, this grape is firmly back in the spotlight, and deservedly so. Pazos del Rey's version is a reminder why: zesty lime and citrus up front, stone fruit filling out the middle, and a clean, mineral edge that gives the finish some snap. There's proper weight on the palate, enough to feel satisfying, but it never drags. Fresh, bright and seriously drinkable.
The Producer:
Pazos del Rey is based in Monterrei, Galicias smallest and often neglected wine region, where Atlantic winds meet the hotter, drier air of inland Spain. The winery concentrates on the areas native grapes, Godello for whites and Mencía for reds, grown on granite and clay soils in vineyards reaching 800 metres. The wines are fresh yet substantial: Godello shows citrus, orchard fruit and a mineral edge, while Mencía brings fragrance and supple red fruit. In this way, Pazos del Rey has helped lift Monterrei from obscurity and establish it as a serious name in Galician wine.
When to Drink:
Spot-on with seafood - grilled squid, prawns or salmon - but equally happy with chicken or a sharp, herby salad.
