Description
In a nutshell:
A sumptuously fruity and pleasingly well balanced left bank Claret
The lowdown:
On the nose this is quite floral and nuanced and, on the palate, has a core of concentrated brambly fruit. It's matured and developed very well over the last few years and is now showing real finesse. The blend of grapes is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot along with some Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and it's aged in two-year-old French oak barrels. That is comes from a château of such distinction is quite evident by what's in the glass and that makes it very good value for money.
The Producer:
Château Léoville Poyferré being a deuxième cru classé estate is up there among the most prestigious châteaux in Bordeaux. It has 80 hectares of vines planted almost entirely with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It has been owned by the Cuvelier family for over century and shares facilities with its sister estate Château Moulin Riche which was once considered its second wine. The estate has long been one of the most innovative in Bordeaux and over the years they've pioneered techniques and practices initially seen as eccentric but later widely taken up across the region. Under head oenologist Isabelle Davin the future success of the château would seem to be in safe hands.
When to drink:
Having aged very well this is drinking very nicely right now and for the next five or six years. With food it's one that'll match up quite nicely with all types of beef - a rib-eye steak especially.
Suitable for Vegetarians
