Description
In a nutshell:
Zippy and crisp, with a burst of ripe tropical fruit, this Kiwi Albarino offers a refreshing twist on a classic.
The lowdown:
This comes from a tiny 1.5-hectare vineyard, so it's always in short supply - but definitely worth snapping up if you can find it. Nautilus nailed it when they planted Albariño back in 2011; this grape is perfectly at home in Marlborough. Expect lovely ripe apricot aromas with a dash of jasmine and orange peel. It's packed with flavour, filling your mouth with a vibrant, zingy finish. With gems like this popping up, Marlborough's famous Sauvignon Blanc might start feeling the heat from charming Albariños like these.
The Producer:
Nautilus Estate, founded in 1985 by the renowned Australian wine makers the Hill-Smith family, has become a Marlborough stalwart. Originally planting just 7 hectares near Renwick, they've since expanded to five more vineyards, producing not only the classic Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir but also experimenting successfully with lesser-known varietals. The Hill-Smiths, backed by the clout of their highly regarded estates back across the Tasman, bring a lot of expertise to the table, ensuring that the Nautilus range lives up to the standards expected.
When to drink:
Pairs beautifully with dishes like grilled shrimp with lemon and garlic or a simple lemon herb chicken.
