Description
In a nutshell:
One of New Zealand's most highly regarded Otago Pinot Noirs.
The lowdown:
This hails from along the Felton Road in the famous sub-region of Bannockburn, near Queenstown in Central Otago, which now regarded as one of the best places in the New World to grow Pinot Noir. After fermentation it was racked off in to oak barrels where it stayed for 12 months on its lees undergoing malolactic fermentation in the process following which it was bottled. It's beautifully aromatic with refined and precise fresh berry, cherry and plum notes followed by complex spice and floral notes. On the palate this medium bodied wine has a savoury bramble quality and with fine tannins, a good balancing acidity and lingering hints of dark cherry it all leads to a delightful finish.
The Producer:
Mount Difficulty Winess origins date back to the early 1990s when the owners of five newly planted Bannockburn vineyards decided to pool their resources and produce wine under a single label. Pinot Noir, the region's hallmark, is naturally their main focus, but they also excel with Chardonnay and a selection of aromatic whites. Now one of Central Otago's most successful estates, Mount Difficulty offers a range of wines that reflect the area's unique qualities. Their more affordable Roaring Meg wines are particularly noteworthy, providing a great introduction to the region's distinctive character.
When to drink:
Superbly complex, and while full ready to drink, this has the ageing potential to see it though to the late 2020s. When it comes to food matching it has the body and crisp acidity to go well with meats such as lamb and duck.
Suitable for Vegans
