Description
In a nutshell:
A refined Côte-de-Nuits red that's all understated elegance, with smooth red fruit, a hint of spice, and a touch of minerality.
The lowdown:
Nestled between the more famous villages of Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis can sometimes be overlooked, which seems a bit unfair given its wines are every bit as impressive. Domaine Lécheneaut does a fine job here - fruit from four vineyard plots across the village is used showcasing Morey's character pefectly. There's a lovely fragrance of cherry and blackcurrant, with a ripe, smooth feel on the palate and a subtle hint of earthy truffle - classic Burgundy. Lithe and full of charm, it's a lovely Côte de Nuits red with a quiet confidence.
The Producer:
Domaine Léchenaut, based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, was founded in the 1950s by Fernand Léchenaut. Starting out with just two hectares of vines, it was a fairly modest affair. Things began to shift in the 1980s when Fernand's sons, Philippe and Vincent, took over. They started bottling their own wines rather than selling to négociants and gradually added more vineyard parcels across the Côte-de-Nuits, including some well-regarded premier cru sites. Today, with 10 hectares, they remain a small-scale operation, focused on producing wines that reflect the individuality of their various climats,. It's all about quality rather than quantity here.
When to drink:
Perfect for game season, it pairs a treat with roast partridge and juniper or a hearty pheasant and chestnut casserole.
