Description
In a nutshell:
Naturally cloudy German Kellerbier from the Mönchshof Brauerei in Kulmbach, Bavaria.
The lowdown:
Kellerbier is a term that originated before refrigeration was available for beer brewed during the cooler months of the year which was then lagered in natural caves, or cellars which kept them at an even, cool temperature for maturation. Monchshof's Kellerbier is a textbook example of the type. It's unfiltered, so naturally cloudy, and has really intense hoppy and citrus flavours with a long dry and herby finish. A true German speciality beer.
The Brewery:
Mönchshof is a German word for 'Monastery' which is where the original brewing activities started all the way back in 1349 in the city of Kulmbach in the Upper Franconia region of Bavaria. In the 1980s it became a part of the larger Kulmbacher Brauerei which has a number of other brands under its ownership. However, the extensive Mönchsof range of beers remain one of their most important labels, especially in export markets. They have their own beerhall and museum in the centre of Kulmbach.
Style - Bock, Marzen & Festbiers ABV 5.4% - Moderate Strength
