Description
In a nutshell:
Think Sancerre-like crispness and zing, but with a friendlier price tag - this Loire Sauvignon Blanc is a total steal.
The lowdown:
This Sauvignon Blanc boasts a delightful intensity on the nose, brimming with tropical and citrus fruit aromas. On the palate, it delivers flavours of citrus, white peach and watermelon, enlivened by a refreshing mineral streak. The body is nicely weighted and round, showcasing the best qualities of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc without the hefty price tag. Produced by Joseph Mellot, one of the larger estates in Menetou-Salon - a lesser-known appellation just west of Sancerre - the grapes for this wine come from gently sloping vineyards near Bourges and benefit from the region's cool climate and limestone soils, much like their pricier Sancerre neighbours.
The Producer:
A pillar of Sancerre, Joseph Mellot boasts a remarkable 500-year heritage. Founded in 1513, this family-run estate has flourished through the generations. The current custodian, Catherine Corbeau-Mellot, along with her late husband Alexandre, have been instrumental in its modern success. Alexandre, a true champion of the Loire's potential, oversaw vineyard expansion, winery modernisation, and a flourishing export trade. Catherine's arrival in 1987 further bolstered the estate's reputation with her deft touch in sales and marketing. Joseph Mellot remains a benchmark for Sancerre, its wines consistently impressing with finesse and terroir expression.
When to drink:
This lively white begs for simply grilled fish or a plate of chilled seafood, though it's perfectly happy to chat on its own too.
Suitable for Vegans
