Description
In a nutshell:
An elegant, fruit-laden Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits
The lowdown:
Marsannay, the northernmost appellation in Burgundys Cote de Nuits, might not have the cachet of some of the bigger names, but René Bouvier, one of the areas leading producers, crafts some impressive wines worthy of attention. This particular one comes from a small 1-hectare plot of 60-year-old vines, the fruit of which is fermented and aged in 20% new oak barrels for 12 months enhancing the structure without overpowering the character. Its fresh and floral, complementing the ripe dark fruit beautifully. And the bright minerality and elegant tannins give it a nicely refined feel all round. A very good example of a village level Côte de Nuits red.
The Producer:
Domaine René Bouvier, first established in 1910, has gradually expanded over they years and now boasts parcels all along the Côte de Nuits, from Vosne-Romanée to Marsannay, making wines from regional appellations to Grand Cru level. They have around 30 hectares in total. Bernard Bouvier, the founder's grandson, has been running the estate since 1992, and during his tenure, he's certainly enhanced its reputation. A significant leap forward was the move to a new winery in Gevrey-Chambertin in 2006, and since 2009, everything has been done organically. It's a solid, family-run operation with a clear focus on quality.
When to drink:
Great drinking right now and pairs wonderfully with game and meaty fish.
