Description
In a nutshell:
Flavoursome, full-bodied, Spanish red Vermouth.
The lowdown:
The deep mahogany of Lustau's Vermut Rojo (Red Vermouth) gives a clue to its main constituents. Dry and nutty Amontillado is blended with sweet, intense and velvety Pedro Ximénez, before being infused with wormwood, sage, coriander, gentian and orange peel. Out of this come delicious aromas of ripe fruits with citrus and herbal notes layered over wood-smoke while on the tongue is an intense, well-balanced fruitiness poised between sweet and dry. There's a classic herbal bitterness on the finish accompanied by a characteristic sherry nuttiness.
The Producer:
Starting in modest circumstances back in 1896 Lustau originally sold their wines to larger producers rather than market them under their own name. It wasn't until the 1940s that they commenced with their own bottlings and this saw the start of real growth in their reputation. While still a small sherry house by the standards of many they are, nevertheless, one of the most respected and their range of sherries, including the acclaimed Almacenista collection, vermouths and brandies are consistently sought after.
When to drink:
A Negroni made with this will be absolutely magic. Also try it alone over ice to explore all its nuances.
