Description
In a nutshell:
An excellent Amontillado from Lustau's highly individual Almacenista range.
The lowdown:
Almancenistas are, usually, small, family owned bodegas that mature sherries for larger 'bottlers/shippers' but are now are few and far between. Since the early 1980s Lustau have been making a premium, small production, high quality range of Almacensita matured sherries. This Amontillado comes from a solera of only 38 casks from the cellars of the Castle of San Marcos in El Puerto de Santa Maria and has an average age of around 12 years. Rich, intense and complex with aromas of praline, orange zest and smoked wood in the background. Dry with refreshing acidity. Nutty with a delicious salty spiced touch and a long aftertaste.
The Producer:
Starting in modest circumstances back in 1896 Lustau originally sold their wines to larger producers rather than market them under their own name. It wasn't until the 1940s that they commenced with their own bottlings and this saw the start of real growth in their reputation. While still a small sherry house by the standards of many they are, nevertheless, one of the most respected and their range of sherries, including the acclaimed Almacenista collection, vermouths and brandies are consistently sought after.
When to drink:
One of the best Amontillados we have tried in a while, it's great as an aperitif, drunk with tapas, or even with spicy Asian cuisine.
