Description
In a nutshell:
This Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, brooding beauty - expect ripe fruit and velvet tannins wrapped in a long, luxurious finish.
The lowdown:
Blackcurrants and freshly baked bread - a classic opening aroma for this Cabernet Sauvignon. Its Argentinian vines hail from the old Finca Libertad, nestled high in the Upper Mendoza Riverbed. This is a wine with tremendous opulence and concentration from old vines of course. Lovely sweet blackcurrant aromas mingle with a touch of toasty oak and a hint of eucalyptus in this gentle Cabernet, cradled by fine, ripe tannins in the mouth. Four months in French oak barrels adds depth and roundness to its overall profile.
The Producer:
Federico Benegas Lynch was born into a winemaking family, but it wasn't until after he'd forged a successful business career in the bright lights of Buenos Aries that he returned to Mendoza and bought Finca La Libertad, an historic 40-hectare vineyard with stony soils on the old Upper Mendoza riverbank in Cruz de Piedra. He quickly set about restoring the vineyard and the old winery attached, his idea was based on the traditional French Chateaux system. Today Bodega Benegas is a hybrid between museum and family home with extensive underground cellars where archives of vintages are kept - and where they make some exemplary wines.
When to drink:
This Cabernet Sauvignon's got plenty of character to stand up to bold flavours. It's perfect for a hearty beef stew or a rich tomato pasta.
