Description
In a nutshell:
An elegant and silky, balanced and fresh red from off the beaten track in Northwestern Spain
The lowdown:
This delicious red hails from Bierzo which is in a fairly remote part of north-west Spain not that far from the Portuguese border. Its made from the local grape, Mencia, which is rightly gaining a pretty good reputation these days. The vines used average around 80 years old so yields are modest and after fermentation in stainless steel the wine spends six months maturing in French and American oak and is bottled without any further filtration. The time spent in barrel has give it a lovely supple palate of black fruits, violets and cloves with fine tannins. Medium-full bodied, it's a really rewarding wine that's well worth a try.
The Producer:
The Merayo family have been growing grapes in Bierzo, in the northwestern corner of the province of Castilla y Leon, for generations. The bulk of their 25 hectares of ancient vines have been handed down through the years, but with a new winery established in 2010 and with the dynamism of the current generation owner, Pedro Merayo, very satisfying results are being achieved.
When to drink:
Drinks beautifully all by itself, but hook it up with beef, poultry or lamb for the perfect culinary companionship.
Suitable for Vegans
