Description
In a nutshell:
A full bodied, smoky and characterful Islay single malt.
The lowdown:
Laphroaig 10 Year Old, created over 75 years ago, is their original single malt and the foundation of all their other expressions. Made with malted barley dried a fire made from the island's own distinctive peat it makes a robust, full-bodied dram with big smoky aromas that lead onto a palate with a pleasant sweetness, hints of salt and of course layers of peatiness. It's got a wonderfully lingering finish and is great taken with just a little water.
The Producer:
Laphroaig, which sits on the southern coast of the famous whisky producing island of Islay among a clutch of other famous distilleries, was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. In 1847 Donald was tragically killed after falling into a vat of boiling pot ale. The business, however, continued in the family until the 1960s since when it's passed through various hands. The last change took place in 2014 when it became part of the Suntory empire along with fellow Islay distillery Bowmore. They are one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries that malt their own barley on their own malting floors.
