Description
In a nutshell:
From the rolling hills north of Auckland, this succulent single vineyard Pinot Noir is rich and fresh, with soft berry fruit and a vibrant, refined character.
The lowdown:
Known for their Burgundian-style Chardonnay, it seems quite natural for Kumeu to turn their attention to Pinot Noir - and their Hunting Hill vineyard is the perfect place for it. The 2020 vintage is bold and rich by Kiwi standards, balanced beautifully by a crisp, refreshing acidity. Floral aromas and ripe strawberries lead the way, followed by a subtle kick of paprika spice and earthy undertones. Pinot Noir isn't supposed to thrive in this part of New Zealand, but the Brajkovich family clearly didn't get that memo
The Producer:
Kumeu River Wines is a New Zealand legend, crafting world-class Chardonnay instead of the country's famed Sauvignon Blanc. Founded in 1944 near Auckland by Croatian immigrant Maté Brajkovich, it's now run by his son Michael (New Zealand's first Master of Wine) and siblings. They offer a warm, family welcome at the cellar door. While their Auckland location presents land-cost challenges, they're expanding to Hawkes Bay. Alongside Chardonnay, they've recently found success with Alsatian-style Pinot Gris and a delightful Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkler. This is a family-driven operation focused on quality, not flash.
When to drink:
Try it with venison sausages or a beetroot and goat's cheese tart, the berry fruit and earthy spice work a treat. Ready now but will hold its own until the end of the decade.
