Description
In a nutshell:
A sweet white Port with an elegant floral and fruity character.
The lowdown:
While much less common than its red cousins, white Port is a very worthwhile drink and great as an aperitif. Lagrima (which means 'tears') is the sweetest of white Ports and it's made in a similar way to its red counterparts with the fermentation being halted by the addition of grape brandy thus giving a high degree of natural sweetness. It was then aged in wood in Wiese & Krohn's cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. It's an intense yet elegant sweet wine with notes of caramel, honey, and nut which is all balanced by fresh acidity and leads to a long and appealing finish.
The Producer:
Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two Norwegians, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn and, in their early years concentrated mainly on German and Scandinavian markets. However over time, even though remaining a small house, theyve built up an outstanding reputation on a wider stage. Long renowned for the quality of their sublime Colheitas (single vintage tawnies), they produce a remarkably complete range, and all of their wines excel in their category.
When to drink:
This isn't a port that needs decanting and will actually keep for a week or two after opening. It's best drunk chilled from the fridge and is perfect as an aperitif, or with fruity desserts.
