Description
In a nutshell:
Elegant and understated is our take on this well-proportioned unoaked Hungarian chardonnay
The lowdown:
Certainly not a bumptious, in your face, fruit bomb, this is definitely at the more refined and restrained end of the scale. It's not oak aged so the fruit and minerality do all the talking and there's a gentleness about the stone fruit and citrus flavours which suit the medium bodied weight very well. Hungary tends to focus more on native varieties, but some more widely known grapes are now starting to emerge as well and with some success as is evident here.
The Producer:
Nimrod Kovacs is the name of the man behind Kovács Nimród Winery. After a career as an ad-man and cable TV executive in the USA he settled back to his native Budapest and got involved in his homeland's wine industry by rebuilding a winery in the country's Eger wine region. Along with the bold flavours of Hungary's well known Bull's Blood wines he also has a soft spot for Burgundian styles which you'll see in his elegant chardonnays and pinot noirs. This is a winery that combines the best of traditional Hungarian and more international styles with an expert touch.
When to drink:
If you prefer chardonnay subtle rather than brash then this is for you. Very nice alongside things like creamy rice based dishes - think risotto or paella.
