Description
Brown, Mild & Old Ale
England: London
ABV 5.9% - 50.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Strongish and malt-led - a mild inspired by Kernel's idea of what those beers were like in Victorian times.
The Lowdown:
The Kernel knows that in Victorian times mild was not the lightweight some of todays are, but a full-bodied, freshly brewed ale with a bit of heft. Their version might be a bit darker and richer than drinkers in the 1800s would have known, yet the idea behind it feels right - a fresh beer, gently hopped with plenty of malt at the centre. It all follows through with smooth chocolate, a touch of hazelnut and a soft toffee note giving it depth and shape. A taste of the past? You be the judge.
The Brewery
The Kernel was brewing in Bermondsey before the now-famous Beer Mile was even a thing. Founded in 2009 by Evin O'Riordan, it set the standard that many others would follow - proper, no-nonsense beer with a focus on quality over hype. And they're not one of those trendy craft brewery brands that started small but sold out to the corporates when the big boys came knocking. The Kernel's indie credentials and credibility are as strong today as they were when they started.
