Description
In a nutshell:
A concentrated and intense example of the northern Rhône's most famous wine.
The lowdown:
This wonderfully complex Hermitage, made from 40-year-old vines, kicks off with wonderfully perfumed aromas of truffles and violets which lead on to a palate packed with blackberries, cloves, smoky tobacco and a touch of spiky pepperiness - a really concentrated and mouth filling experience. The texture is pleasingly smooth and the bright minerality and fresh acidity keep everything very well balanced as it reaches the long, lingering finish. It's named after the estate's winemaker, Emilie Desmeure. Hermitage, home of the Rhône's most exclusive and sought after wine, has less than 140 hectares in the entire appellation. That's less than a single large estate in Bordeaux, so there's not much of it to go round. And this example from Domaine des Remizieres perfectly captures the essence of what these wines are all about.
The Producer:
Until the 1970s the Desmeure family used to sell the fruit from their 4 hectares of vines to the local Cave Coop. But since deciding to produce and bottle on their own account they've established Domaine des Remizieres as a respected producer in their corner of the northern Rhône. Since the early 80s they've steadily added new vineyards and now have an estate that extends to 36 hectares across the Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas and Saint Joseph appellations. However, they remain of the few, smaller scale, properly family-owned producers in an area where most estates have been by negociants and other major Rhône valley producers.
When to drink:
Hermitage wines are capable of ageing for many years so you could happily cellar this until around 2040. However it's also perfectly ready for drinking now. Open an hour before drinking and partner it with rich game dishes, lamb, or beef.
Suitable for Vegans
