Description
In a nutshell:
A delicate, floral and crisp nglish sparkling rosé from the highly regarded Gusbourne Estate.
The lowdown:
The fruit for Gusbourne's wines from their vineyards in Appledore, Kent and at Goodwood in West Sussex. For this, their sparkling rosé, the blend of grapes used is 60% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay and just a spoonful of of Pinot Meunier. To create the delicate pink colour a small amount of barrel aged red wine is blended in before bottling and secondary fermentation. The result of this is a wine with a delicate, summery, salmon pink colour with aromas of strawberry and apricot, and creamy red fruits and herbs on the palate with and a rounded texture coming through at the complex finish.
The Producer:
South African Andrew Weeber is the person behind Gusbourne Estate. In 2004 he started a vineyard here, in Appledore Kent, from which to produce English Sparkling Wine and the first wines followed in 2010. Their vineyards, south facing on the low slopes of the Kentish escarpment, are planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. From the outset the vision was to establish Gusbourne as one of the best English producers and to that end substantial investment was made and a talented team of staff assembled. These days their reputation is such that their wines are found on the lists of many of the country's most prestigious restaurants which speaks volumes about their achievements in the last few years.
When to drink:
Always a brilliant sparkler to drink on its own it's also a perfect partner at summer picnics with smoked salmon, light cheeses and summer fruits - think Glyndebourne on the lawns.
