Description
In a nutshell:
Dark and smouldering porter softened by a kiss of toffee sweetness
The lowdown:
This dark, robust porter was brewed to have the strength and stamina to last long sea journeys to places like the Caribbean which led to its name. It brims with dark, roasty malt flavours plus hints of chocolate and coffee and a touch of caramel sweetness. All this achieves a good balance between bitterness and malt sweetness, making it dangerously smooth and moreish.
The Brewery:
The story of Guinness begins in 1759, when Arthur Guinness secured a long lease for the St. James's Gate brewery in Dublin. Initially focused on ales, Guinness soon transitioned to a dark brew - a porter in the style popularised in London. However, the key difference was Irish barley. Rich in nitrogen, it yielded a smooth mouthfeel and the iconic creamy head, a stark contrast to the harsh stouts of the time. By the 19th century, Guinness had become a national treasure that evolved into a symbol of Ireland itself which endures to this day.
Style - Porter ABV 6.0% - Strong
