The Lowdown:
Plush and polished, Quinta dos Malvedos has been the backbone of Graham's ports since they acquired the estate in 1890. And in the years when vintage ports arent declared, it steps into the spotlight as their flagship single quinta, carrying all the richness and elegance of Graham's classic style. 2012 was a dry year in the Douro, meaning smaller yields but impressive concentration and aromatic intensity. The result? A generous, fruit-forward port with expressive floral notes, silky dark fruit flavours, and layers of cedar and spice for added complexity. Full-bodied and intense, but beautifully refined.
Vintage port spends most of its time maturing in bottle rather than cask, so expect a bit of sediment - it'll need decanting before you pour.
The Producer:
Established in 1820 in Oporto, W & J Graham is one of the Port trade's famous names and has long been synonymous with some of the greatest Vintage Ports. The Symington family acquired the company in 1970. At the heart of Graham's Port is the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley. The old winery was completely renovated in 2000 and is now equipped with three revolutionary robotic lagares that 'tread' the grapes. Alongside these are the ancient granite lagares where some of the harvest is still trodden by human foot. The neighbouring Quinta do Tua and Quinta das Lages in the Rio Torto valley are key vineyards for Graham's, as are the privately family owned Quintas of Vila Velha and Vale de Malhadas.
When to Drink:
Plush and velvety, this is made for rich, indulgent pairings. Go with Chocolate fondant or classic blue cheese - Stilton or Gorgonzola, where its deep fruit and spice meet their perfect match.
