Description
Port
Tawny
ABV 21.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A rare, deeply matured tawny with extraordinary concentration, lifted aromatics and the finesse that only half a century in cask can produce.
The Lowdown:
The calling card of long-aged tawnies is their remarkable concentration. Decades in cask can cut volumes by around 50%, and the costs involved make wines like this rare - but certainly something special. That span of time also means more than one hand guiding the process, and here it's the work of two generations - Peter and Charles Symington - watching over the casks that make up this blend. The colour shows the hallmarks of real age: a deep orange-brown core with a dark walnut base and a pale green rim, the classic sign of a well-matured tawny. The aromatics are layered and expressive, moving through orange blossom, fruitcake, toffee, tobacco and butterscotch. The palate is substantial and creamy, with plenty of richness held in check by vibrant acidity. Seasoned wood, nutmeg and cinnamon come through on the finish, which stays long, steady and thoroughly satisfying.
The Producer:
Established in 1820 in Oporto, W & J Graham is one of the Port trade's famous names and has long been synonymous with some of the greatest Vintage Ports. The Symington family acquired the company in 1970. At the heart of Graham's Port is the famous Quinta dos Malvedos in the upper reaches of the Douro Valley. The old winery was completely renovated in 2000 and is now equipped with three revolutionary robotic lagares that 'tread' the grapes. Alongside these are the ancient granite lagares where some of the harvest is still trodden by human foot. The neighbouring Quinta do Tua and Quinta das Lages in the Rio Torto valley are key vineyards for Graham's, as are the privately family owned Quintas of Vila Velha and Vale de Malhadas.
When to Drink:
Serve after dinner with strong blue cheese, roasted nuts or dark chocolate, where its depth and acidity play naturally with richer flavours.
