Description
In a nutshell:
A lively, crisp, and floral example of Japan's foremost grape.
The lowdown:
This one is all about elegance and style, made from Koshu, Japans premier grape variety, ideally suited to the countrys humid climate. Grown in the foothills of Mount Kayagatake, it boasts a fresh crispness and subtle minerality. Aromas of pears, peaches, and honeysuckle stand out, complemented by a good solid backbone. And in true Japanese style, it finishes with a delightful hint of umami savouriness.
The Producer:
Grace Wine, founded in 1923, is one of Japan's small band of independent wine producers and is in the Yamanashi prefecture, about an hour west of Tokyo. This family-run winery, led by the Misawa family since its inception, cultivates both local and international grape varieties. However, their export focus is predominantly on the indigenous Koshu grape, Japan's most important variety. In a field dominated by conglomerates like Suntory and Asahi, Grace Wine stands out as a bastion of quality and independence.
When to drink:
What else but Sushi or Sashimi would you go for - lighter Thai recipes and Vietnamese cuisine also works pretty well.
