If you're looking for an introduction to top level Super-Tuscans, Ca' Marcanda's Promis is a just the place to start. It's bold but smooth, focusing on ripe fruit and supple tannins, which make it easy to appreciate. Merlot leads the blend, with Syrah and Sangiovese adding depth, and a year in barriques bringing everything together. Nicely aromatic, it has floral notes of wild rose and violet upfront, followed by subtle hints of eucalyptus and pine. Fresh red and black fruit flavours come through on the palate, backed up by a creamy texture and well-integrated tannins. A touch of spice and a wisp of smoke linger on the finish, rounding things off nicely. Polished but very approachable..

A latecomer to Bolgheri's Super Tuscan scene, but very much at the top table, Ca' Marcanda is a Tuscan outpost of the legendary Angelo Gaja. Established in the 1990s on what was once orchards and farmland, the estate was a meticulously planned project from day one. Gaja's aim? To create wines that could stand alongside his famed Barolos and Barbarescos - and he's done just that. Precision, polish, and a keen sense of place define Ca' Marcanda's Bordeaux-style blends, now firmly among Bolgheri's finest.
When to drink:
Already firing on all cylinders, this is spot on with rosemary lamb chops, Tuscan sausages, or rich aubergine parmigiana - the bold fruit and smooth tannins complement its rich, savoury layers beautifully.
