Description
In a nutshell:
A compelling and classic Barolo single cru from an excellent producer.
The lowdown:
The wines of Barolo are the quintessential expression of the Nebbiolo grape of which the best examples are among the most sought after fine wines of all. The Brunate vineyard is one of those recognized as a Cru and is split between the communes of Barolo and La Morra. Rinaldi prefer the more traditionalist approach to their winemaking and, after allowing a lengthy fermentation the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks for around 4 years. With a classic garnet tinge, a reflection of the ageing, the wine has a nicely perfumed nose where you can pick out rose petals and violets. On the palate is a definite austere, savoury, meaty quality with warming spicy notes running through as well. The robust tannins aren't overbearing, but well integrated and the good balancing acidity results in a quite sublime example of Cru Barolo.
The Producer:
Francesco Rinaldi e Figli is one of the great names in Piedmont. Located in the town of Barolo itself, the estate has a long and illustrious history in the region since its foundation in 1870. Giovanni Rinaldi built a winery and cellar in the town and this came into the charge of his youngest son Francesco in 1922. His sons Michele and Luciano further developed the estate in the 1960s and in the 1990s Luciano's nieces Paola and Piera took the reins and currently run the estate. While they make several wines from across the region their flagships are from two single cru Barolo vineyards, Brunate and Cannubi. They only have small holdings here and the wines are pretty sought after. While the estate is proud of its traditional approach sisters Paola and Piera have broadened the estate's horizons considerably.
When to drink:
Just about ready to drink now, though decant 1-2 hours in advance, this will last right through into the 2030s. Bold flavoured red meat, or game dishes are the classic foods to go with this.
