Description
In a nutshell:
A classic and easily enjoyable Barolo from a great estate.
The lowdown:
A wonderfully pure expression of quality Nebbiolo and while Rinaldi very much produce wine in the traditional style this Barolo is approachable and quite enveloping. Produced from only 3ha of vines from five Cru vineyards in La Morra, Barolo and Castiglione Falletto it's matured in the traditional way in large 5000 litre Slavonian oak barrels for three years. Ruby garnet in colour the aromas have that wonderful, distinctive, all encompassing, ethereal quality that only good Piemonte Nebbiolo can do. Perfumed notes of concentrated red berry fruit and floral notes lead onto a dry, rounded and concentrated palate with savoury touches, robust tannins and balanced acidity.
The Producer:
Francesco Rinaldi e Figli is one of the great names in Piedmont. Located in the town of Barolo itself, the estate has a long and illustrious history in the region since its foundation in 1870. Giovanni Rinaldi built a winery and cellar in the town and this came into the charge of his youngest son Francesco in 1922. His sons Michele and Luciano further developed the estate in the 1960s and in the 1990s Luciano's nieces Paola and Piera took the reins and currently run the estate. While they make several wines from across the region their flagships are from two single cru Barolo vineyards, Brunate and Cannubi. They only have small holdings here and the wines are pretty sought after. While the estate is proud of its traditional approach sisters Paola and Piera have broadened the estate's horizons considerably.
When to drink:
Drinking now but decant for at least 1 hour, but this wine will keep for decades to come.
